Plasmas Broadened Cardinal Metals’ Services

Cardinal Metals of Dallas, Texas, a full-line steel
distributor, added two MultiCam® Plasma CNC
cutting machines to fulfill customer fabrication
requests. Now also a steel service center, it pro-

vides the first line of processing by burning parts
out of steel plates and sheets. The shop bought a

second 6000 Series Plasma when a constant stream of increased business had the first table running up to 19 hours a day six days a week.

Three generations have kept Cardinal Metals
growing since George Yoes founded it in 1979.

Son David Sr. and grandsons David Jr. and Barry added the first MultiCam in 2007 and the second in 2011. They chose MultiCam because the well-
established manufacturer also provides convenient local service and support.

“Some of our raw steel customers began buying MultiCam cutting tables,” said David Sr. “We

knew how well they work, so we chose MultiCam when we went into the fabrication business.”

David Jr. said, “MultiCam makes very good qual-
ity machines. And we can rely on prompt Tech
Support over the phone or to come out in person.”

“The EZ Control is easy to operate,” said Training Manager Barry. “You only need to learn four or five buttons on the keypad.”

CNC Plasma Applications

Carinal Metals offers full-line steel cutting service center, Cardinal Metals cuts a wide variety of plasma parts.

“We put the second plasma in because we needed
more capacity than one machine could handle,”
David Jr. said. “Now we’re expanding the table
length because we’re producing more parts. We’ll
save time loading and unloading by putting two
plates side by side.”

The plasma also boosted productivity by etching
part numbers onto plates before cutting parts. This
automation replaced the slow hand-marking step.

With 19 employees, Cardinal Metals has grown

from 16,000 square feet to three buildings totalling
40,000 square feet plus outside storage. Its cus-
tomers represent commercial construction, oil and
gas, transportation, OEM manufacturing and road

construction equipment industries.

Cardinal Metals has earned a reputation for pro-
ducing accurate parts in a timely manner and

providing personalized service. With two plasmas, the steel part business increased its capabilities

and revenue substantially. Orders range from 50 to 150,000 pounds. The owners plan to enlarge the production space again as business continues to flourish, thanks mostly to word of mouth.
